The Pillow Toppers

For a solid month after Nibbles and Pudley joined the family, all four dogs slept in the bed with me. It was bliss. I had Heather at my feet, Mr. K curled up next to me or on my stomach, Nibbles sharing my pillow and Pudley on the pillow next to me. Yes, it was crowded but I absolutely loved everything about it. That is, until all that Scottie cuteness prevented me from getting any sleep.

In theory, it made sense to move the bed downstairs, especially with Heather aging and not being able to handle the stairs as well. Plus, if she got the urge to pee in the middle of the night, all I had to do was get out of bed and walk maybe ten steps over to the door. What I did not anticipate, however, was Nibbles and Pudley learning that I would wake with pretty much any move they made and therefore, they could set and reset my Scottie alarm clock as they deemed necessary.

I was torn. I loved finally being able to share a bed with the Scotties and having that sense of security knowing I was there should anything happen to Heather. And the new pillow toppers, they were cute as ever. I thought it was the sweetest thing that Nibbles wanted to be so close and so soon after being rescued. Many nights, we lied there face-to-face. Except when Pudley decided enough was enough and showed displeasure in his lack of attention by settling on top of my head.

Alas, the need for sleep won and I resorted to sleeping in a bed without dogs (especially after one of my pillow toppers decided to soil the brand new box spring and mattress) for the time being. In the nights that followed, I certainly missed having the pups surround me but I woke up feeling much more refreshed and arguably with enough energy to keep up with all four after all. As for my pillow toppers, not to worry - they have comfortably taken to topping the pillows on the couch every night!

  1. haha we never had dogs in the bed (we were Lab people) until we got scotties! As much as we said no at the start, they insisted. Guess who won that battle :-)

  2. Well I for one love to sleep in my own Lands End bed with my name on the cover. But come five in the morning why I jump on the big bed and Lee and I snuggle for two hours. I'm like a good alarm clock.

    1. That'd where we are. They start the night in their beds but they join us as soon as there is any light from the coming day :-)

  3. I'm still worried about Heather-you should make an exception for her.

  4. Yes, we have 2 pillow toppers! Tessie goes on her Daddy's pillow and Riley on Mum's pillow, and sometimes they switch sides! I love them to pieces!
We hope Heather is doing well. She is in our daily prayers, as are you.
    Hugs,
    Riley-Puppy, Tessie-Girl and Mum
